The 2017 edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac marks its 225th anniversary. It has a long and storied history, and is heralded for its highly accurate reputation. It averages an 80 percent accuracy rate! Since 1792, The Old Farmer’s Almanac has spoken to all walks of life: tide tables for those who live near the ocean; sunrise and planting charts for those who live on the farm; recipes for those who live in the kitchen; and forecasts for those who don’t like the question of weather left up in the air.
According to Country Living’s assessment of the almanac forecast: “Every region of the U.S. will be hit with a different type of terrible. The Northeast and Midwest can expect “colder than normal” temperatures and precipitation is supposed to be “above normal.” If you’re in the Pacific Northwest, you can expect a lot of rain and chilly weather. And in the Intermountain and Appalachian regions, where ski enthusiasts would actually like cold temperatures and lots of snow, it’s set to largely be warmer and less snowy than usual.
“The only upside is that the South is supposed to experience a very mild winter, so it might be time to get that Florida timeshare you’ve been thinking about purchasing. Or go the other way and get a cozy cabin up in Vermont where you can watch the snow fall while curled up by the fireplace.”
For a broader interpretation, we looked to the Farmers’ Almanac website: “The Farmers’ Almanac, which breaks the country into seven zones, and offers predictions for three-day intervals, forewarns of a mixed bag of wintry weather for both December and January. But it’s really February when the frigid temperatures take hold (northern tier states could see ambient air temperatures as low as forty degrees below zero!). This is the month you want to make sure your heat works, your long johns are washed, and your slippers are nearby.
“Get the snow blowers ready in the East and umbrellas in the West! An active storm track will deliver above-normal precipitation to the Southeast, Northeast and New England states throughout most of the winter, especially February. In addition, another active storm track from the Pacific will deliver a dose of above-normal precipitation across the Western States. Meanwhile, near or below-normal precipitation will cover the nation’s midsection.”
