On April 26, the wife of Sergio Oros Sanchez took off for work, leaving behind her husband and her four year old daughter. What happened after the doors closed behind her is every mother’s nightmare. Sergio Oros Sanchez reportedly attacked his stepdaughter by raping and beating her until she was unconscious. When the brutal attack left the four year old girl unresponsive, Sanchez rushed her to a private physician, hoping to keep the incident under wraps. That physician saw the seriousness of the girl’s injuries and took her to the hospital.
When Sanchez delivered his stepdaugher to the hospital, he reportedly told nurses that the girl received the injuries in a fall. But no one believed him. Medical personnel called authorities as the injuries were obviously as sign of physical abuse. Sanchez was arrested that day, and the girl was pronounced dead. During interrogation, Sanchez admitted to having abused the girl in March as well.
On May 2, Sanchez was taken to a prison in the border city of Reynosa in the northern part of Tamaulipas, Mexico. When Sanchez arrived, he was met by what is known as a “welcoming party,” a group of inmates who intend to serve justice to those charged with abusing or murdering children. Police in Tamaulipas, Mexico, confirmed that on Sanchez died from injuries accrued during a “scuffle” in Reynosa prison. That scuffle reportedly involved only him.
Within the prison was, significant power is wielded by prisoners who are members of the Gulf Cartel, according to JammedUp News. In 2008, the Reynosa prison was the site of a bloodbath in which members of the Gulf Cartel turned on former associates, Los Zetas, due to their decision to begin operating independently.
It was reported that the official death toll of that prison riot was twenty one, but eyewitness accounts estimate it was a much higher figure. Many of the bodies were reportedly incinerated.
“There are charred bodies among the dead,” a spokesman for the local state attorney general’s office said at the time, according to BBC.
While many feel that justice for Sergio Oros Sanchez was served, others have deeper questions. For instance, it has been asked why the mother would leave her daughter alone with such a terribly violent man. When she left for work, she may not have thought rape and murder were in the realm of possibility, but surely she didn’t feel he was the best caregiver for her daughter. There must have been clues to the brutal nature of a man who would do something so vulgar and animalistic.
What are your thoughts on this case? Is the mother to blame for putting her child in harm’s way? Did Sergio Oros Sanchez deserve to die in a violent beating that mimicked his treatment of his stepdaughter? Or should he have been given the chance to reform and repent?
