Back in our school days, we were drilled with all kinds of rules and lessons for the various subjects we were assigned. While some of them stick in our heads forever, others fall by the wayside and we find ourselves scrambling for Google when it’s time to help the kids with homework.
As AWM shares, this is one of those problems that may leave you scrambling. It’s a relatively simple math problem, but it’s remarkably stumping roughly nine out of 10 adults that attempt it. While the math whizzes among us will likely have little trouble blurting out the answer, plenty of other people are walking away scratching their heads after coming up with an answer that is pretty far off from the actual result.
In order to solve this little nugget, you’ll have to go way back in the memory bank. While it includes the simple concepts of addition, subtraction and division, the failure to adhere to a basic mathematical concept will provide you with a vastly different answer than the correct one.

That concept is the orders of operation, and there are some hard and fast rules for how you should attack multi-step problems. Take a stab and see if you remember before peeking at the answer, and be sure to pass it along and see how many people you can stump.
