From the time we are children, we are taught about bonding through pacts. At a very early age, both boys and girls strive to be a part of something and feel welcomed in a world that can sometimes feel very big and daunting.Children agree on these pacts as a way of feeling like they are part of something, but they are often forgotten over time, and we grow up and move on. Back in the 80s it was a big deal for girls to become “blood sisters” and mash their cut fingers together, in an attempt to build a lifelong bond. Movies like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants have taught us the importance of building bonds through pacts, but in real-life one pact that was formed between two friends, has the world in tears.

Five years ago, Kevin Elliot told his best friend Barry Delaney that he had enlisted in the Army. Like most new recruits, Elliot was experiencing anxiety about the possibility of having to go to combat and in order to ease his mind Delaney made a pact with his best friend. He told him that if anything happened to him while in combat, he would wear a bright dress and bright socks to his funeral. Neither of them thought that would ever be necessary. And then, one day, Delaney received the horrible news that Elliot had been killed in combat.

While Delaney was mourning the loss of his best friend, he remembered the pact that he had made five years before and he was determined to honor it. He showed up to the funeral in a bright yellow dress and bright pink socks pulled up nearly all the way to his knees. He received a lot of questionable stares but he didn’t care and nobody questioned him. Everyone knew this was something that he had to do to fulfill his pact.

This story is one that involves a true bond between two best friends. We can only imagine that Elliot was watching over Delaney and laughing at him as he donned a very bright dress and socks to one of the most serious events he would attend in his lifetime.
