Boy With Down Syndrome Has No Idea Dad Is Home From Deployment, Then He Feels A Tap [video]

When a service member comes home after a long tour, it’s always a happy moment, as the family is reunited once again and everyone is safe. All the feelings of the unknown slip away after a military member’s assignment is over. Yes, these families probably get used to the up and downs of military life, but it doesn’t mean that it’s easy.

Family members have been surprised quite a bit lately, when their loved ones surprisingly show up when least expected. It’s often a moment of pure joy with lots of hugs and happy tears, but every now and then, someone is so caught off guard that it takes them a bit of time to process that their beloved military mom or dad is standing right in front of them.

After being deployed to Southwest Asia for six months, Technical Sergeant John Grieten was on a mission to surprise his son with down syndrome, so he plotted with the boy’s teachers and waited for the right moment to make his presence known. In the video below, you can watch 15-year-old Joshua receive the surprise of a lifetime as his dad approaches him from behind. At first, Grieten simply stands behind his boy as he is in the middle of participating in a school program. And then, he leans in and asks Joshua if he can sit next to him. “Dad?” the boy asks in a state of shock, before he leaps up into his arms and hugs him while yelling “daddy!” Joshua is normally a very joyful child but in this moment he is so overwhelmed and happy, that it causes those witnessing to tear up.

And even in the midst of this shocking moment, Joshua remembers his manners and proudly introduces his dad to his school friends.

But Tech Sergeant Grieten’s job isn’t done, as he has to surprise his school-aged daughter next. And he doesn’t hold back on making it the ultimate surprise for her, as he gets down on his hands and knees and crawls to her while she is at the lunch table in the cafeteria. Again, he asks…”Is this seat open?” and his daughter jumps into his arms and screeches in delight, as the rest of the kids witness the moment while they eat their lunches.

It’s hard not to cry tears of joy when watching these beautiful surprises between service members and their families…
