Alyssa Young and her husband went to the hospital for a routine check-up for her pregnancy this September.
Alyssa has cerebral palsy and diabetes, which makes pregnancy more risky. Therefore, it was crucial for her to carefully monitor the progress of her fetus. Everything seemed to be going well until Alyssa started suffering severe pain following an ultrasound.
Alyssa didn’t think much about it at first, but when it became an upset stomach and pelvic pains, she was seriously worried.

“Being pregnant, it is very hard to diagnose pains with everything physically changing. Friday rolled around and I just couldn’t take this pain anymore… Sunday, October 2, I was taken to the Emergency Room in my hometown because I was still in pain and having minor bleeding… Scarlett was perfect, so they sent us home. My husband and I were so relieved. We thanked God our girl was fine. Monday approaches, and I call my Obstetrician back… I was told that everything I was experiencing was normal.”
A few days later, Alyssa returned to the hospital because of the severe pain. At the hospital, the obstetrician told Alyssa she had an incompetent cervix, so her body was attempting to miscarry the baby.
Alyssa was given magnesium to prevent her cervix from dilating, but Alyssa’s cervix continued to dilate the next day, and the baby was born a few hours later.
At just 20 weeks and 5 days, Scarlett was just too young to survive even with a full neonatal ICU. Alyssa and Justin knew that their baby girl would not survive long, so they made sure family and friends were around to say both hello and goodbye to Scarlett.
Scarlett only lived for two hours, but she was given love and affection from her mom, dad, and everyone present during that short time.

If only for two hours, it still was a joy.
