POPULAR LOCAL STORE REFUSES TO TAKE DOWN SIGN REGARDING WELFARE - SHOULD THEY TAKE IT DOWN?

Fake signs insulting welfare recipients have been posted at various Philadelphia-area grocery stores, and the signs have upset both store patrons and management.

Amateur comedian Jay McGuire is the man who has posting signs at the entrances to Philadelphia Wawa grocery stores, and then putting up a pic of the signs on his Facebook page. The official-looking signs insult users of food assistance programs and incorrectly claim the grocery chain will no longer accept government food stamps.

Jay McGuire is an amateur comedian who decided to post the fake signs saying that the customers paying with food assistance were no longer welcome.

The fake sign reads:

“We are no longer accepting EBT. Please use cash or credit. If you do not have cash or credit then maybe it’s time to get a job.”

The signs are fake and not reflect the store’s policy towards EBT users. The stores remove the sign as soon as it is noticed.

McGwire posts the false signs, then shares what he observes on his Facebook page.

Many commenters do not see the humor in McGuire’s fake signs. Several of them pointed out that the large majority of federal food aid recipients are in fact hard-working families with children, the elderly, and people with permanent disabilities. Many of these people only receive the minimum wage or barely above at their job.

USDA statistics show that around 20% of people receiving federal food benefits are elderly or disabled, and close to three-quarters of recipient households include a child, an elderly person or a disabled person.

Moreover, a recent study from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities determined that “The overwhelming majority of SNAP recipients who can work do so. Among SNAP households with at least one working-age, non-disabled adult, more than half work while receiving SNAP, and more than 80 percent work in the year prior to or the year after receiving SNAP. The rates are even higher for families with children, more than 60 percent work while receiving SNAP, and almost 90 percent work in the prior or subsequent year.”
