Nearly a third of California residents are in support of the ‘Calexit’ movement. Even if the number continues to grow to a majority, though, it’s not going to be very easy.
A Reuters/Ipsos national survey found that 32 percent of Californians are ready to bid the U.S. a fond farewell. In the face of a Trump presidency and a Republican-controlled Washington, they are ready to secede.
“There’s such hostility towards Trump that many citizens believe it would be smarter to leave than fight,” said Steve Maviglio, a Democratic political consultant.

California isn’t the first state to cry secession in modern times; it’s common before and after elections for people to bring up the ‘s’ word. When President Obama first won the 2008 election, someone from every state in the nation filed for secession. As the 2016 election approached, some 40 percent of Texans were in favor of ‘Texit’ if Hillary Clinton became president.

According to the Constitution, states can’t secede without the blessing of all other states. Even if Californians were able to obtain that blessing, they’d be in a difficult situation. The state, which is already deep in debt and already has the highest tax rate in America, would have to find a way to purchase their land from the U.S., and figure out how they were going to afford power and water– two important resources that are not available within the state’s borders.
Even in the face of challenges, some Californians are willing to give it a go. “I’d be fine with that,” said Peter Thiel to The New York Times. Theil is considering running for governor of the state in 2018. “I think it would be good for California, good for the rest of the country. It would help Mr. Trump’s re-election campaign.”
A lot of conservative Americans who see the highly liberal state of California as not in line with traditional values. Many of them, too, would be fine with that.
