If You See Someone With A Black Dot On Their Hand, Call The Police Immediately

We all hope and expect our own homes to be the most comfortable and safest environment for our family, and ourselves. Sadly, this isn’t the reality for many victims of domestic abuse, as their home is often the most unsafe and scary place they can be. Getting help in an abusive situation can be very difficult, as the abuser is often observing every interaction. But, a recent campaign is making it easier for domestic abuse victims to seek help.

One English woman and former domestic abuse victim knows this all too well, and that’s why she created The Black Dot Campaign. The campaign both raises awareness for spousal abuse, as well as gives victims a subtle platform to seek help from authorities.

This campaign simply advocates for domestic abuse victims to mark a black dot on the palm of their hand. It’s a very discreet sign that signals for help, without letting the abuser know their intentions to get assistance. This way, the abuser won’t catch on to what is going on, which protects the victims from any further abuse.

The Black Dot Campaign’s message is outlined on their Facebook page.

“A social media campaign which was launched to offer sufferers of domestic violence support has been pulled over fears it could alert abusers to their calls for help.

The Black Dot Campaign encourages those subject to domestic violence to draw a simple black dot on the palm of their hands as a sign to alert others to their situation.”

If you notice someone with a black dot on their hand, it is important to know how to approach the situation properly. Never confront the abuser yourself, but instead get in contact with trained professionals who are able to intervene. Never put yourself in the middle of a risky situation, but do your part to reach out to the authorities who can do the most help.

The Black Dot Campaign aims to help victims of domestic abuse by creating a safe place to start the conversation.

“The original ethos for this campaign was to enable a victim to put a dot on their hand around someone they trusted to enable a conversation to start, so they could open that door and hopefully start a process of seeking professional help. This is an idea, thinking outside of the box, trying to open up the world’s eyes and ears to what is going on in terms of abuse. The idea came from a former domestic violence victim. Professional bodies have not been advised or trained in the Black Dot, what it symbolises [sic] and what it means. When people contact us we open the gates of communication and put them in touch with people who can really help.”

The Black Dot Campaign is an innovative idea that, according to its Facebook page, has helped women so far get out of abusive relationships. However, it’s important to note that it is not recognized by first responders, social workers or medical care professionals. They may not immediately pick up the sign, so victims are advised to not rely solely on the black dot to obtain help, but instead to use it as a tool.
