It’s not unusual for music superstars to lip sync for live TV performances, like New Year’s Eve Times Square and the Superbowl, especially if their performances feature complex choreography. Also, sometimes the weather makes it nearly impossible to sing.
With that having been said, that doesn’t mean that major music stars want you to know that they’re being supported by a vocal track!
Unfortunately for Mariah Carey, the curtain was fully pulled back on her performance at Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Years Eve 2017 last night, and we found the footage online.

The technical difficulties start at the 1:10 mark. It seems like Mariah sang the intro herself, and then planned on relying on a lip sync track for her ’90s hit, Emotion. At first, you can hear her trying to imply that she can’t hear through her ear piece to the crew. However, it seems like the real problem is that the vocal track was somehow dropped from the sound board!

After the song Emotion ends, Mariah says, “I’m just being a good sport here.”
While other stars would’ve stormed off the stage, Mariah powers through the rest of the performance, even asking the audience sing for her like a true queen!
