A young boy in China was eating dinner with his family when he began vomiting profusely. They found black specks in his vomit and wondered what he might have eaten. They rushed him to the hospital and learned the boy ate pencil graphite.
The third grader, known only as Liu, had to have his stomach pumped. His vomit was black and doctors were shocked by the amount of graphite he’d eaten. It took three hours for the doctors to remove it all.
When the family asked Liu why he ate the graphite, he said he was hungry. The frightened boy eventually admitted that two older female bullies force-fed it to him. They threatened to beat him if he didn’t eat it.

The child was ashamed of the fact that girls had been bullying him and he hid the problem from his family.

According to the US National Library of Medicine, graphite is non-toxic. It’s a soft form of carbon. Even though it’s not poisonous, large quantities can result in pain and vomiting. Thankfully, pencils no longer contain lead, which is very toxic.
