Leland Shoemake was a very special young man. Despite all he was going through in battling brain-eating amoeba, he managed to leave a truly touching final message to his parents before he passed away.
The 6-year-old boy died earlier this year, after weeks of difficult treatments. When his parents went back home for the first time without Leland, they found an amazing note from their son that they will treasure forever.
Leland’s dad Tim found the note in the living room on the table where Leland used to draw. Tim broke down into tears as soon as he read the note. He then ran to his wife to show her the note.

“To say I lost it was an understatement,” Amber said. “We cried together for the longest time.”
The couple point out that their precocious son often wrote them notes or drew pictures, but this was their most cherished one. In fact, they framed the note and hung it in their living room.
In her Facebook post, Amber notes that Leland was an intelligent and curious boy.
“He knew his abc’s, numbers, colors, shapes and 20 sight words by the time he was a year old. He was our little nerd and we loved that about him. He loved school and loved to learn. He loved the history channel, the weather channel, documentaries and anything about history,” she explained. “He had a hunger for learning.”
His mom noted that Leland was also a very friendly young man. He would strike up a conversation with practically anyone he met, and hiss friendly personality led to some new family friends.
