IF YOU KEEP KETCHUP IN YOUR HOUSE, DOCTORS HAVE A SERIOUS WARNING FOR YOU

If you’re trying to eat healthy or lose weight, you might be using one very unhealthy item on a regular basis without ever realizing just how bad it is for you. While you’re counting calories and carbs in your burger, eggs or potatoes, how often have you bothered to check your ketchup?

Ketchup is one of the most popular condiments in America. We’re so used to seeing it in just about every home and restaurant that we rarely stop to read the label. If you did, you might be shocked to find out just how much sugar is in it.

Ketchup makers actually try to hide just how bad their product really is for you. In the list of ingredients, laws require manufacturers to list ingredients in order of the amount used. The first ingredient listed in ketchup is ‘tomato’, which is what you might expect.

Only look a second and a third time. Manufacturers add high fructose corn syrup, which is usually listed after tomato. An ingredient or two down from there, you’ll find they list regular corn syrup. Both high fructose corn syrup and regular corn syrup are pure sugar– by using the two different types and labeling them separately, it prevents ketchup manufacturers from listing sugar products as the main ingredients.

A serving of ketchup is one tablespoon, which is about how much is in a ketchup packet. That amount contains the equivalent of a teaspoon of sugar. If you are having several packets worth (or several tablespoons full) in one sitting, those teaspoons of sugar really add up.

The sugar is added to ketchup to make it addictive. The vinegar in ketchup cuts the underlying sweetness, but it’s there. The more you have simple carbs like sugar, the more your brain craves them. Next time you might want to skip the ketchup and try a healthier condiment, like avocado mash, pesto or salsa. Make sure you read those labels, though!
