SERIOUS WARNING SENT OUT ABOUT FAVORITE HOLIDAY GIFT ITEM, DOCTORS EMPHASIZE THEIR DANGER

If you love burning scented candles, you might want to start paying better attention to the quality of your product. While candles are supposed to emit relaxing aromas that alleviate stress and help you relax, some of them might be emitting toxins into the air instead.

Environmental pollutant expert Anne Steinmann of the University of Melbourne warns that certain candles may release harmful chemicals into the air as they burn. Benzene, toluene, and other toxins are found in some types of candle wax. These invisible poisons can cause brain damage, lung problems or affect the central nervous system.

Paraffin candles are the biggest culprit. South Carolina State University researchers conducted a test and found that an unscented paraffin candle emitted far more toxins than candles made of vegetable wax like soy. Paraffin is a petroleum product.

“For a person who lights a candle every day for years or just uses them frequently, inhalation of these dangerous pollutants drifting in the air could contribute to the development of health risks like cancer, common allergies, and even asthma,” said Ruhullah Massoudl, a chemistry professor.

The National Candle Association told the Huffington Post that there’s nothing to fear. “The safety of scented candles is backed by decades of research, fragrance testing and a history of safe use. The fragrances approved for candle usage — whether synthesized or ‘natural’ — do not release toxic chemicals. Health and safety studies are conducted for fragrance materials used in candles, including toxicological and dermatological tests,” they said in a statement.

Still, if you find scented candles an irritant or find yourself having problems, it might be a safer bet to just snuff the candles out and get some natural potpourri.
