Single Mom Just Trying To Help Gets More Than Expected With Who Showed Up

In Phoenix, Arizona, a single mother was just trying to help when she turned around to a shocking surprise she definitely wasn’t expecting. Now, she and her young son will never be the same after getting a knock at their door and seeing what was on the other side.

Kirsten May lives alone with her 4-year-old son, and like many single parents, Christmastime can be particularly difficult. She was struggling with the reality of her situation and the fact that this joyous time of year wasn’t going to be magical for her little boy, so she tried to do something to help the two of them. Having just lost her job and being just days from eviction and living in their car, she made a single phone call and ended up with far more than she hoped for.

Desperate and with nobody to turn to, the first call May decided to make was to the police to see if there was anything they could do for her since she was at rock bottom. “I lost my job. I lost daycare,” May said, 12News reported. “I was completely at rock bottom.” While many may question her decision to call police on this matter, for May, she had nobody and nothing else and her well-being was in peril for her and her son. It was a last resort and what the officers did about it was nothing short of incredible when they could have simply expressed their sorrow for her dire situation and moved on.

Officers Jason Harris, Brian Peters, and Ben Carro with the Phoenix PD heard about what she was going through and contacted officer Manuel Reyes who works at Home Depot when he’s not on duty. Using his store connections, the group of officers were able to get her a free Christmas tree but didn’t stop there. With the help of a group called Angels on Patrol, they filled the tree with gifts for May’s little boy and one large gift for the mother — a check for her rent to cover an entire month so she doesn’t get evicted.

“I cried like a little kid,” May said. “My son gets to experience what holidays are about thanks to what these officers did and are doing. It shows they don’t just arrest people.” Having alleviated the pressure of pending eviction and knowing that her son wouldn’t be waking up on Christmas morning in their car, May was able to find another job already and will soon get back on her feet, thanks to this help.

Nobody would have questioned the police for telling this woman that there was nothing they could do for her situation since it was out of their job description to assist in matters like these, but instead, they saw an opportunity to help and took it. They proved that there’s a heartbeat behind the badge, and this mother and her son won’t ever forget it.
