A Facebook story has helped a lot of people find comfort in their faith. The story is an old one, and if it literally happened, no one knows anymore. However, even if it isn’t literally true, it’s full of truth and meaning.
The story is of a young boy who feels he’s ready to become a man. His father agreed that the boy was ready and took him on a walk deep into the forest. He sat the boy on a stump and blindfolded him.
The father told the boy he had to sit on the stump the whole night. The boy was not allowed to remove the blindfold or call anyone for help. The boy agreed that he could do it and promised to follow the rules.
All night, the determined boy sat there on the stump. The unfamiliar sounds scared him and the cold set into his bones, bringing a chill over his body. Just like he promised his father, though, he didn’t get off the stump, call out or remove the blindfold.
In the morning, the sun rose. The boy could feel the warmth on his skin and he knew the ordeal was over. He finally removed the blindfold and was stunned by what he saw: his father was sitting on another stump, and had been watching over him all night to ensure he was safe.
Some take this as a reminder that those we love always have our back. Religious people see even deeper meaning; they understand the story to mean that God is always watching over them, even when we feel alone, scared, and can’t see him.
