One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, but sometimes that becomes remarkably true in more than just the figurative sense. As shared by AWM, a group of broke college students recently hit the jackpot, and it all went down when they purchased a raggedy second-hand couch.
Reese, Lara and Cally are roommates that attend The State University of New York, and they’re no strangers to living on a budget. Putting yourself through school can be financially challenging, and that can lead to plenty of situations where you learn to make the best with what you have. Even with that philosophy, unplanned expenses will come up from time to time, and the trio found themselves in need of a new couch.
Since they’re completely broke, a trip to the Salvation Army was in order, and they were able to pick up a used one for $20. While not the most luxurious piece of furniture, it did the trick for their limited means. They had it in their possession for quite some time when they noticed it felt a little lumpy, so they did a little digging.

That lumpiness turned out to be envelopes stuffed with cash to the tune of $40,000. The honest girls did a little more digging, and they uncovered a deposit slip with a woman’s name on it. They were able to reunite the woman with her small fortune, and they walked away with a reward for their troubles.
