While it’s pretty obvious that we’re all unique in our own ways, some of us are a little more unique than everyone else. In fact, there are some people out there that have a rare extra hole on their bodies – and it’s not because they’re huge fans of piercing.
As The Mirror reports, some people are actually born with a tiny hole above their ears. The holes are barely visible, but once you grab a glimpse of it your mind will naturally begin to wonder. Before you freak out and think that you’re dealing with an alien-like being of a fish out of water, there’s actually a reason for it.
It’s a rare birth defect that only happens to a fraction of the population. The people that have them were born with something called a preauricular sinus, and that leads to a malformation around the external ear. It can manifest itself as a dent, dimple or nodule, but in essence, it’s just another tiny hole.

While that’s the bare bones explanation, there is an evolutionary biologist named Neil Shubin, who says they could be an “evolutionary remnant of fish gills.”
