There has been no shortage of developments and news coming from the early days of the Trump administration, and we can now add the first military action of his presidency to the list. A manned raid was conducted against al Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen over the weekend, and it resulted in one casualty for the US armed forces.
As the Daily Beast reports, 14 members of al Qaeda were killed in total. Four US servicemen were injured in addition to the one casualty, and US Central Command chief Gen. Joseph Votel expressed condolences.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our elite service members. The sacrifices are very profound in our fight against terrorists who threaten innocent peoples across the globe,” he said.

While this technically counts as the first military action of the Trump administration, reports indicate that the action has been in the planning stages for some time by the Obama administration.

“This was a deliberate raid planned well in advance. It was not top-down driven – percolated from the operators the ground,” a source claims.
President Donald Trump also quickly issued a statement on the raid.
“The sacrifices made by the men and women of our armed forces, and the families they leave behind, are the backbone of the liberty we hold so dear as Americans, united in our pursuit of a safer nation and a freer world. My deepest thoughts and humblest prayers are with the family of this fallen service member,” the statement read in part.
Differing reports on the number of al Qaeda members actually killed, with an official of the group claiming that the number was actually 30, and included women and children. No confirmation has been provided for that claim, and military officials are confident that its hyperbole as the group has a tendency to inflate casualty totals.
“We had eyes on for a long time. I’d be surprised if there were any civilian casualties,” an official said.
