Former President Barack Obama was a firm believer in second chances, and that’s evidenced by the inordinate amount of pardons and commutations he handed out. Obama commuted or pardoned the sentences of a staggering number of individuals during his time in office. For perspective on the commutation front, Obama’s number of 774 is more than the previous 11 presidents – combined. In a perfect world, all of the individuals granted executive clemency will go on to live exemplary lives in which they stay on the right side of the law, but we do not live in a perfect world.
As KCEN TV reports, one of the beneficiaries of Obama’s actions is already behind bars. Robert Gill, 68, had his life sentence reduced by Obama. The man was arrested back in 1990 as part of a heroin and cocaine distribution ring, and the book was promptly thrown at him. He reportedly used his time wisely in prison and studied law. Gill petitioned the president for mercy, and Obama bought it. His life sentence was reduced and he was granted his freedom – at least for a little while.

However, it didn’t take long for Gill to be back up to his old tricks. Although he was reportedly working as a paralegal for a firm in San Antonio, he apparently had enough time for a side gig. That side gig involved the distribution of drugs, and he was busted by the cops after fleeing the scene of a deal gone awry. He crashed into another car while fleeing the scene to make things easier for the authorities, and he’s charged with possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.

Gill is being held without bail pending a hearing later this month, but it’s hard to envision a scenario in which he beats the rap on this one. He was given a second chance and proceeded to blow it, and it’s quite clear he can’t handle the responsibilities that come along with being a free citizen that stays on the right side of the law.
