GIRL STARTS NOTICING STRANGE THUMPING IN HER JAW, THEN SHE REALIZES WHAT IT IS (PHOTOS)

A UK teen began getting a pain in the back of her mouth, and assumed, because she was 18 years old, it was wisdom teeth. She felt what she thought was a swelling, but it just kept getting bigger. Dentists were baffled, but mom knew something was wrong and rushed her daughter to the emergency room.

Nadia Hobbs says she first noticed a pea-sized lump on her jaw when she was rubbing what she thought was wisdom teeth pain. The lump kept getting bigger and bigger, until it looked like Hobbs had a jawbreaker candy tucked down behind her molars.

Her mother, Rachel, brought her to the dentist, but they were stumped. All they could confirm was that the lump and pain had nothing to do with wisdom teeth. Rachel got a nagging feeling in her gut and rushed Nadia to the emergency room. They referred her to a specialist.

Nadia was given an MRI, and doctors found a huge mass growing in her jaw. The teen was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare and very aggressive cancer.

“I’d always been completely healthy before my diagnosis, I was applying for university and really happy with my life,” Nadia explains.

The family was shocked by the seemingly healthy girl’s diagnosis, but Nadia jumped right into fighting the disease. The brave girl went through seven rounds of chemotherapy. To date, the tumor has shrunk some 75 percent.

It’s been hard. Losing her hair was especially difficult for the young girl. With her family, and her supportive boyfriend, Callum, standing by her side, she’s managed to push through and fight. Her radiation treatments are coming to an end; Nadia can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The teen took the strength she’s developed from fighting her own cancer and is fighting for others. She is trying to raise awareness about the disease, and reminding others that teens get cancer, too. She encourages people who have unusual symptoms or lumps to get to the doctor, ASAP.
