When you’ve been around the block a time or two and delivered more speeches than you can count, there’s a good chance that you’ll deliver one that misses all of the notes you intended to hit. Sometimes, the speech can go so poorly that it borders on the edge of bizarre. That was the case for former First Lady Michelle Obama, and it just so happens to be courtesy of one of the final speeches she delivered in that role.
As The Political Insider shares, Obama’s speech was intended to provide hope and inspiration to young women. In short, the speech’s goal was to point out that adversity can be overcome, and that all of your dreams are within reach if you fight hard enough for them. That’s a fantastic message, and a gifted speaker such as the former First Lady would normally have little trouble pulling that off. However, her A-game was left behind on this day, and the speech quickly turned into a self-aggrandizing soliloquy on how darn wonderful she is.

Ceremonial backslaps are all fine, well and good while taking a victory lap, but Obama’s speech had a decidedly different tone. Namely, she seemed hell bent on pointing out how ‘hot’ she is, and how that has been a tremendous burden that she has been forced to bear throughout her life. She lamented the excess attention she has always received from men, as well as how difficult that continues to make things for her.

Lost in the shuffle was the whole message on overcoming adversity and achieving your goals, as Obama seemed far more concerned with getting these little tidbits off of her chest. It came across as poorly as it sounds, and veered off into the neighborhood of a rant from someone that feels they are not receiving enough attention for their appearance. She’s certainly getting it now, but not quite in the way she was anticipating.
