There’s no shortage of unresolved issues currently making their way through the nation’s court system, and although many of them may seem pretty trivial at first glance, the matters are a pretty big deal to the parties involved. As Providr explains, that’s certainly the case for this legal row between two black pepper purveyors about which one is providing consumers with more bang for the buck.
The beef stems from the packaging tins for the rival companies. McCormick’s tins appear much larger than rival Watkins, but it turns out that both packages contain the same amount of black pepper. Watkins is concerned that size matters when it comes to gaining consumers attention, and they also feel that their rival is deceiving customers.
“McCormick has been illegally ‘slack filling’ its ground black pepper in tins in a manner that misleads retailers and consumers and is an illegal, deceptive marketing practice,” a release from Watkins reads in part.

The packages are both identically marked to state that they contain 6 oz. of pepper, but Watkins feels that McCormick’s larger package is giving it a leg up in the pepper wars.
