SOLDIER AT MEMORIAL HEARS TWO MEN LAUGHING, IMMEDIATELY TEACHES THEM SOME RESPECT (VIDEO)

When you go to visit a certain monument in Washington, you need to approach it as a solemn moment. If you don’t, the guard is going to call you out.

In Arlington, National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands atop a hill overlooking Washington, D.C. Congress approved the burial of an unidentified soldier’s remains from World War I. Since then, the soldier’s remains have been exhumed and identified. The Tomb of the Unknowns remains there, as a tribute to all those fallen heroes who have died but never identified.

Since 1925, guards have protected the tomb. First civilian, then later military sentinels ensured that the monument and the soldiers it represents are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. The guard’s routine is very regimented as he walks up and down a mat– each time, using the precise number of steps, standing the precise number of seconds, and turning with his weapon in a precise manner. The changing of the guards, which occurs every hour, is equally as meticulous.

Visitors to Arlington may approach the tomb to take pictures and film the changing of the guard’s ceremony, but only if they do so thoughtfully. If visitors begin chattering or laughing, the guard turns around, steps off the mat, and tells the visitors, “It is requested that everyone maintains a level of silence and respect.”

Unbelievably, there are people who do forget that they’re not in an amusement park, but there to honor fallen heroes. If they need a reminder, the guard is happy to oblige.
