A little girl who wandered away from home and into the woods on a cold winter evening was missing for 15 hours. Authorities and her parents feared the worst, but she was found unharmed the next day. She managed to survive thanks to the family dog.
Victoria, 3, snuck outside to find one of her dogs, named Rusty. The dog was inside the house, but Victoria didn’t realize it. She went with her other dog, Blue, and the two walked for hours.
It was February in Arizona, and Victoria was barefoot and without a coat. She got lost just a half mile from home in the woods. When she got tired and laid down on the ground, Blue cuddled up with her and kept her warm. For the next 15 hours, with temperatures dipping down into the 30’s, Blue took care of Victoria and kept her safe.

The next morning, a helicopter search took off and they spotted the girl and dog within a few minutes. A medic team arrived on the scene first and Blue initially crouched over Victoria protectively.

“I think the dog initially was apprehensive of me,” said on medic to KPHO News. “I was a little concerned he might bite me when I first walked up. But as I just walked right past the dog, I think the dog realized I was there to help the girl.”
“You could see the dog’s expression almost turn to a smile,” the medic concluded.
The family is thrilled that Victoria is fine, and they are indebted to Blue for protecting her.
