A video a mom shared to Facebook shows her son getting a punishment in school– an old-fashioned paddling doled out by two staff members. The mother said she felt pressured into letting the punishment take place, but she regrets allowing it to happen. The video sparked a heated discussion on social media about a government institution having the right to dole out corporal punishment to a child.
Shana Marie Perez knows her son misbehaves. She says she doesn’t raise him to be bad, but he’s not very disciplined and gets in trouble at school. This time he got in trouble for spitting at another student.

The 5-year-old has missed 18 days of school for cancer testing, according to Perez. She’s been told by the school board that if he misses one more day, she could go to jail. She says that’s why she reluctantly gave consent for the Jasper County Primary School Principal Pam Edge to paddle her son.

Perez was behind bars already for her son’s truancy, and didn’t understand that she had a right to decline to let the school paddle him. “I didn’t know I couldn’t get in trouble,” Perez said. “They told me either he gets a paddling or he gets suspended.”
Perez secretly filmed the ordeal and posted it to Facebook. She explained how helpless she felt when she watched her son being held down. “To be honest, if I could go back I would have just grabbed him up and said, ‘You know what? No, you can’t paddle him, just go ahead and take me to jail.”
Police say they can’t confirm if Perez’s son had cancer testing done on the days of his absences, but they did confirm that if the boy was suspended the mother wouldn’t have been arrested.
Many anti-spanking advocates say the ordeal is not only painful, but humiliating. The American Academy of Pediatrics opposes striking children, and say it’s never recommended. Studies have shown physical punishment to be the least effective mode of discipline, and it’s been linked to various mental health problems.
