For many musicians, setting up and playing on the street is a great way to get some instant feedback on their songs. They can quickly judge whether a new tune is a hit or can capture the attention of the audience. And as you can imagine, getting busy people to stop going where they’re going to stand and listen to you play is not an easy task. So musicians who do play on the street deserve a bit more credit than they traditionally get.
As you’ll see in the video below, the young lady in the red skirt didn’t just gather a crowd around her playing, she got the attention of legendary singer-songwriter Seal. The famous celebrity was so impressed by the young street performer, he walked up to her and decided to have a conversation about what she hopes to get out of a career in music…

“It made me realize the only difference between him and me is opportunity,” Seal tells young Poppy. “I realized for some people that they maybe didn’t seize the opportunity or the opportunity didn’t come around quite yet.”
Poppy listens and agrees with Seal. And as you can tell, she is hoping this could be such an opportunity for her.
“I came from the streets,” Seal says, “and that’s what fascinates me about listening to other people’s stories. And I wondered if you had a story?”
Poppy describes how she moved up to Manchester from Brighton in order to pursue music. She makes her money playing guitar and singing every day.
“When you said you came up here to do music, what is your goal? What is it you really want from music?” Seal asks the eager young performer.
“I want to write music,” Poppy tells Seal. “I don’t really enjoy performing. I want to write.”
“So do you have no desire to be in the public eye?” Seal asks.
“I’m happy to do it but it’s not something I thrive on.”
“So you never see yourself as a solo artist, really?” Seal asks. He is interested in helping this girl reach her dream.
“Well I would do that of course,” she says.
At the 6:15-mark Seal offers to sing the famous Bob Marley song “I Shot the Sheriff” with Poppy. For the next several minutes, she plays guitar while the famous singer takes the mic.
