One Pell City, Alabama mother found herself in a difficult financial situation and there appeared no way out of it. But then a random stranger stepped in to help, and it made all the difference.
Melissa Simms knew she had to go to a follow up doctor’s appointment, but she didn’t know how she was going to pay for it. She had undergone a series of surgeries and needed the doctor to check it out to make sure she was healing properly.

Because she didn’t want to go to the appointment alone, Melissa called in sick for her sonTrey and took him along with her to the doctor’s office. But when she arrived at the office, Simms found herself in an embarrassing situation. She realized that she didn’t have enough money for the co-payment…
“Me and my husband woke up and split out last ten dollars for gas, for him to go to work and for me to make it to my doctor’s appointment,” Simms said. “All day I was stressed about how am I going to make supper for my kids.”
But somehow a stranger noticed Simms’s struggled and stepped in to help. While his mother was seeing the doctor, the strange woman approached Trey while he was in the waiting room.
With a smile and a wink, she handed the teenage boy and envelope and told him to give it to his mother.
The boy was dumbfounded and didn’t say anything to the woman. Not even thank you…
“If I would have known what it was, I would have told her thank you,” Trey said.
Trey barely had the self-control not to tear open the envelope and see what was inside. But he somehow managed to leave it alone until his mother rejoined him. When he handed it to her, she was confused. Then he told his mother about the strange woman.
Cautiously, Simms opened up the enveloped. Inside was a handwritten note with a Bible verse and a $100 bill…
“I’ve had days like you’re having today,” the note read. “Hang in there. Joshua 1:9.”
If you’re unfamiliar, Joshua 1:9 is a scripture from the Bible that reads: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
When Simms figured out the meaning, she was brought to tears. She was overjoyed to get the money she needed too.
“It is a complete feeling of peace, just like everything is going to be OK,” she said.
Simms used the woman’s gift to pay the doctor for the service. She also used the money to buy dinner for her family and to go shopping.
“I don’t know what she looks like, I don’t know her name, but I hope I get to meet her to say thank you,” she said.
Overwhelmed, Simms posted about the experience on the What’s Happening in Pell City Facebook page along with her intentions of paying the good deed forward:
“I was having one of those days where it just seemed everything was going wrong and then….a unknown woman which I will call her an (EARTHLY ANGEL) handed this to my son while we were at the doctors office to give me. This made my whole entire day THANK YOU and I will pay it forward! I have read about these random acts of kindness, but this is the first time I have ever experienced it first hand!!! Just thought maybe this could cheer up someone’s day as much as it has mine!!!”
