Donald Trump will upset many of his anti-establishment fans if he nominates Mitt Romney for secretary of state, Newt Gingrich warned Sunday.
According to Newsmax, the former House speaker pointed out that Romney made “vicious” remarks about the Republican candidate during the race for the White House. “Speaking for most of the Trump supporters, while we will support President-elect Trump in whatever he does, I think we would be enormously disappointed if he brought Mitt Romney in any position of authority,” Gingrich told Fox News.
He claimed that “there’s nothing Mitt Romney can say that doesn’t sound phony and frankly pathetic,” adding: “He did all he could to help cause Trump to lose Utah. He called Trump vicious and vile things … and the idea – now that Trump has won – that Mitt Romney would suddenly decide to issue a mea culpa and say, ‘Oh, gee, all the vicious things I said about you when you were running, I didn’t really mean.’ (He) sure did mean them, and he sure did try to defeat Donald Trump.”

Despite having referred to Trump as a “fraud” and a “con man” during the campaign, Romney is apparently among the president-elect’s leading candidates for the State Department position.

Kellyanne Conway, a Trump adviser who was the Republican nominee’s campaign manager, agrees with Gingrich. “I’m all for party unity, but I’m not sure we have to pay for that with the secretary of state position,” she said. “It’s just breathtaking in scope and intensity the type of messages I’ve received from … people who feel betrayed.”
