When a Minnesota man decided to join the Islamic State group in Syria, the hammer came down hard on him after he was caught. In court on Tuesday, the 21-year-old man who wanted to become an ISIS fighter and kill people stood in front of the judge and said:
“I am a terrorist, your honor.”

On Tuesday, one of Musse’s co-defendants and conspirators, Hamza Ahmed, was sentenced to 15-years in prison on similar charges connect to the terrorist plot.
Before he received his punishment on Tuesday, the young Musse, apologized to his family for trying to join the American killing terrorists. He admitted he lied to those he loved in order to join the killing squad and understands that he committed a serious crime.
Because the young man had shown some regret, the judge on Tuesday chose to be direct and give the man a chance to announce his crimes. He asked if he was a terrorist, and Musse simply replied: “I am a terrorist, your honor.”
Musse, Ahmed, and two more conspirators took a Greyhound bus on an hours-long ride from Minneapolis to New York City in November 2014. Federal agents stopped them as they were about to board an overseas plane out of JFK International Airport. It didn’t take long for the federal agents to discover their hateful motives.
The group of friends were inspired to join ISIS in the spring of 2014. Some made it to Syria, but the nine who were prosecuted were caught before they could join the militant group and kill Americans.
Three men, including Musse, were sentenced this week. Two were given lighter sentences because they cooperated with the law. Musse and Ahmed pleaded guilty but refused to cooperate. They received harsher punishments.
Four more of the men caught trying to become terrorists are awaiting trial. Three of those men went to trial on charges of conspiracy to commit murder outside the U.S., which carries a life sentence. Prosecutors pushed for 30-40 years.
While Musse insulted the judge’s intelligence on Tuesday, his attorney, Andy Birrell, said his client wasn’t reformed, but he thinks he can be saved.
Musse admitted he didn’t cooperate with the government because his terrorist friends wouldn’t have liked him anymore.
Before he was sentenced, Ahmed told the court he was grateful the agents stopped him because it saved his life and probably others. But he admits he has more work to do.
“I want you to understand I am not completely changed,” Ahmed told U.S. District Judge Michael Davis. “I’m in the process, but nobody changes overnight. I’m trying every day. I want to reach that point.”
