PELOSI SEEKING ANOTHER TERM AS HOUSE MINORITY LEADER

Democrats will likely re-elect Nancy Pelosi as their House minority leader when the new Congress is seated in January, according to Politico.

The California lawmaker told the news site on Monday that she is committed to retaining the position, in hopes of Democrats regaining control of the House in the 2018 midterm election. Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio also is running for minority leader, but he has gotten endorsements from only two fellow Democrats. Pelosi, who was speaker of the House when her party held the majority, claimed she is the only lawmaker in the chamber with the experience and ability to rally the Democratic members.

“I don’t intend on this phone call, or any conversation with members, to make myself a lame duck,” Pelosi said in the Politico interview. “What you have to do when you’re going into this is to go in with the most strength as possible. That’s just the way it is. I know how to do this. I’m not asking anyone to support me for what I have done, one thing or another, whether it’s politics or policy or money. I’m asking them to support me on what I will do in the future.”

The 76-year-old congresswoman, who has led her party in the House for 14 years, expressed confidence that Democrats will be unified in their opposition to Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress. She suggested that Democrats could benefit from a voter backlash against the GOP leadership.

“I see a very good opportunity for us to win the majority,” Pelosi said. “Much of this will be pivoted off what the Trump administration will be doing….We have to make sure people know what this means for their lives.”
