MCCAIN TELLS TRUMP: ‘WE WILL NOT WATERBOARD’

Donald Trump must overcome the objections of Sen. John McCain if he is to make good on his campaign promise to reinstate the use of torture techniques in the interrogation of suspected terrorists.

“I don’t give a damn what the president of the United States wants to do; we will not waterboard,” the Arizona Republican declared Saturday in a speech to the Halifax International Security Forum. “We will not torture people. … It doesn’t work.”

Politico noted that at a debate of Republican presidential candidates in February, Trump vowed to “bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding.” The real-estate mogul then asked, “What do you think about waterboarding?” When many in the crowd applauded, he declared: “I like it a lot. I don’t think it’s tough enough.” During a rally in June, Trump told his supporters that “we have to fight fire with fire,” and “fight so viciously and violently” to defeat ISIS.

McCain, a victim of torture during more than five years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, reminded his audience that the Geneva Conventions and the U.S. Congress have banned such methods. The law President Obama signed last year limits interrogators to techniques that the U.S. Army Field Manual recognizes. Waterboarding is not among the approved activities.

Politico pointed out that the United States used the improvised drowning technique, as well as other acts of torture, during the administration of President George W. Bush in the early 2000s.
