With all of the hysteria surrounding President Donald Trump’s executive action on immigration, it can be pretty easy to get caught up in the hype and lose sight of all of the facts. Social media and mainstream media is absolutely littered with an all-out assault on the new policy, and stirring images of protests at airports across the nation and of detainees being released have done nothing but fan the flames even further.
While there’s no doubt that the rollout could’ve been handled much better, to suggest that the order is some form of a nefarious plot from the Trump administration is crossing the line into irresponsible journalism. Deportations have occurred under virtually every presidential administration, including the one that just came to a close. In fact, as Snopes reports, the Obama administration holds the record for the most people deported during the course of a presidency.
Reports of that record-setting pace remarkably flew under the radar, and there was nary a hastily organized protest to be found. For raw numbers, more than 2.5 million people were deported during the Obama presidency through 2015, including an eye-popping number of more than 435,000 in 2013. President Obama’s totals surpassed those of his predecessor, President George W. Bush, who saw a shade over 2 million people deported on his watch.

Those facts have been remarkably absent from the majority of reports on the order from the mainstream media, and the general interpretation of the policy has been to instill as much fear and outrage as possible in readers and viewers. While doing so, the general insinuation is that the Trump administration is attempting to rule through fear and subversion, so it’s quite ironic that certain members of the press are following the same practices while informing the masses.

Bottom line, that leads to an incredibly confused and outraged group of viewers and readers, but that unfortunately appears to be the tact that the mainstream media will continue to take.
