Allison and Josh knew they were going to get married and have children just weeks after they first met. Fast-forward a couple of years and the two were married and ready to have kids. The talked about having two, maybe three children at most.
However, things worked out a little differently. The couple had four biological children and an adopted son by 2013, and thought they had completed their family. However, in October of 2015, Allison got a call from a friend, asking that the couple consider adopting another baby because the pregnant mom was not in a position to take care of the baby.
Josh and Allison almost immediately said yes. When the woman went into labor less than a week later, the family got in the van and drove to Duke University Hospital. The family also received another phone call while they were on their way to the hospital; the woman was actually having twins.

The couple said sure they wanted to keep both of the twins. Then a few minutes later Allison received another phone call. This time it was bad news, as it turned out one of the twins only had a brain stem, not a real brain, and would probably not live more than a few hours.

Little Ava was a fighter, however, and enjoyed all the love that Allison and Josh could give her for several months before she passed away. The good news is that Ava’s twin Sam is thriving as the youngest member of Josh and Allison’s loving family.
