SHE HADN'T DONE A THING ABOUT THE LUMP ON HER FOOT FOR A DECADE, DOCTORS JUST DELIVERED SOME UNEXPECTED NEWS

When she was just 15 years old, a girl noticed a small lump on her foot. She ignored it and hid the unsightly lump from her family and boyfriend. At age 27, she finally had it checked out, and it was bad news.

Cheryl Murray, now 27, thought the lump was an ’embarrassment’ so she didn’t mention it or let people see it. The UK woman finally told David McKenzie, her boyfriend, about it when she could no longer hide it. He convinced her to go to the doctor.

Murray’s lump was cancerous. She was diagnosed with sarcoma, a connective tissue cancer. Because she had waited so long to get treatment, doctors said they needed to amputate her leg.

The news of the cancer and the amputation devastated Murray. “I never thought it would be anything serious. I was hysterical. I was so stunned I couldn’t speak,” she said. “I felt like I had been punched in the face twice on one day.”

Murray quickly found something to fight for, and a brighter future on which to focus. McKenzie proposed to her just before the operation. “I tell him daily that I can’t imagine what I would have done without him. Knowing I wanted to build a life with him kept me going,” said Murray.

Murray’s leg was amputated below the knee. Now, cancer-free and with a prosthetic leg, the new bride-to-be is rebuilding her new life, with her new partner.
