DO YOU SUPPORT THE NEW OHIO LAW EFFECTIVELY MAKING ANY FORM OF ANIMAL ABUSE A FELONY?

A new law in Ohio has animal rights activists very happy. Effective on September 13, 2016, anyone who harms an animal will be charged with a felony crime.

The Dick Goddard Law was named after a journalist who was very outspoken about animal abuse. Many animal abuse charges used to be misdemeanors, but now anyone who intentionally causes harm to an animal will have a felony on their record.

The bill got bipartisan support from Rep. David Hall (R) and Rep. Bill Patmon (D), who initiated legislation and presented it to the House of Representatives. After passing in the house with a vote of 92-1, the Senate unanimously passed it.

“My passion for animals has only increased over the years. I’m proud to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves,” said Goddard before Ohio representatives. “We need to stiffen our laws for the mistreatment of companion animals. We need to bring Ohio into the 21st century.”

In addition to making it a felony to purposely harm an animal, there will be strict penalties for those who assault law enforcement animals. They will face mandatory jail times. The new law is just a major step toward protecting animals across the state.
