After Donald Trump met with Mitt Romney on Sunday, Vice President-elect Mike Pence confirmed that the former Massachusetts governor might become the nation’s next secretary of state.
The Hill reported that Trump sat down with several candidates for positions in his cabinet at his golf course in New Jersey. Romney told reporters that he and the president-elect had “a far-reaching conversation with regard to the various theaters in the world where there are interests of the United States of real significance.”
Pence added: “The president-elect was very grateful that Governor Mitt Romney came in. They had a good meeting. It was a warm and substantive exchange. I know he is under active consideration to be secretary of state of the United States along with some other distinguished Americans.”

Another contender for the job is Rudy Giuliani, who made campaign speeches and did media interviews in support of Trump’s White House bid. The former New York City mayor reportedly was also under consideration for attorney general, but lost out to Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama.

Some political pundits think Romney, who urged his fellow Republicans to not vote for Trump, would be a surprising choice for a cabinet job. The party’s 2012 presidential nominee never endorsed the real-estate tycoon. However, the administration may need someone with his “experience, credibility and independence,” according to The Hill.
