Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he has changed his mind about appointing a special prosecutor to pursue criminal charges against Hillary Clinton, Politico reported.
“It’s just not something that I feel very strongly about,” the president-elect responded when he was asked about the issue during a meeting with the The New York Times editorial board. He predicted that his supporters will not be “disappointed” by the news, adding: “I think I will explain it that we in many ways will save our country” because continuing to investigate Clinton “would be very, very divisive for the country.”
Trump, who repeatedly promised during the campaign to put Clinton behind bars if he won the race, now claims he does not want to “hurt the Clintons.” He told the Times that he is “not looking to go back and go through this.” The news might come to a shock to the president-elect’s fans, some of whom chanted “lock her up!” at his campaign rallies.

The conservative Judicial Watch also wanted to see Clinton prosecuted. The group’s president, Tom Fitton, had called on the president-elect to “affirm the rule of law and appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the Clinton scandals.” He argued that not holding the former secretary of state accountable for her use of a private email server and her fundraising for the Clinton Foundation would be “a betrayal of (Trump’s) promise to the American people to ‘drain the swamp’ of out-of-control corruption in Washington, D.C.”
